KODACHADRI
Located 1343 meters above the sea level and lying in the lap of the western ghats, kodachadri has grown as a heaven for nature lovers. This scenic hill station is totally filled with flora and founa sharing history with several myths and legends. It is a heaven for trekkers. This mountain is situated in the Shivamogga District of Karnataka.
When we look at the past, history takes us to 12th century. Even though it is in Karnataka, you will find many keralites than Kannadigas, it's because Mookambika temple in Kollur is the main spiritual center for Kerala people. And the Moola staana (center of origin) of Mookambika godess is situated at the top of the Kodachadri hill. And if you trek 2 Km's from there you will reach Shankara Peeta where Shankaracharya has meditated.
To get to the top, you can either hire the jeep or you can trek by yourself. The road is full of mud and the bumpy ride in the jeep gives us a memorable experience. And if you choose to trek, there are many number of routes available.
We took the shortest route which was via Nagodi. Nagodi is a small village near Nittur. A right diversion from the main road took us to the foothills of the hill where a forest check point is there. There we parked our vehicles. We paid 20 rs each for the pass.
It was a 5 Km's trek to the Moola staana. On the way we were able to find Indian bison. Which is a rare species found in forests. Remember, if you make eye contact with them, they will definitely attack back. There are two temples at the moola staana. There were many number of people visiting temple.
Later we started towards Shankara peeta. It was mid noon when we reached to the top and the full area was covered by mist. We couldn't able to see any views, but we were completely satisfied. Priest was performing pooja and he aslo narrated story of shankaracharya.
When we were completely exhausted and searching for food, we found a man selling some snacks there. He told that he climbs the hill 4 times daily with some food items on his back!!. And sometimes 6 to 7 times on peak seasons. I wonder how that guy does it.
We had 2 people from Mangalore who neither had seen any mist or hills in their life. They were completely astonished by the journey!.
And yeah! we did the trekking again for those 2 boys sake.
