KAVALEDURGA

Our visit to Kavaledurga was unplanned. We actually started to the place when one of our friends suggested the place. I had heard people talking about the big fort in Kavaledurga and people also talk how suitable place is for trekking. We all were tired but still agreed to visit there looking forward for a great enjoyment there.

We reached there by 3 P.M. We parked our vehicles and moved towards a shop nearby to get something to drink and eat. The shopkeeper told us about how to get on to the top and he also suggested us not to return without visiting the top of the hill. He also told us about the three gates which we were supposed to cross to reach the summit. Now the journey begins...

Before sharing my experience I would like to tell you about the history about the gigantic fort in Kavaledurga. The fort is located at an altitude of 1541 meters above the sea level. The history says that this fort was built in the 9th century and later was reconstructed by Cheluvarangappa in 14th century. The fort was maintained by Venkatappa Nayaka during 17th century and was later occupied by Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan. The fort is named after the village Kauli.
You can never afford to miss Laxminarayana temple, Shikareshwara temple, and Kashi vishwanatha temple situated in the fort. There is a small pool named Gadda Theertha where you get to see water there even during summer. In the fort you can see things like swimming pools, jail, galige battilu (used in ancient times to measure time), horse and elephant stable and many more.

On reaching the summit you get a great view of Western Ghats, backwaters of Varahi and Chakra dams and also you get to see the Kudhuremukha and Kodachadri hill peaks.

Now let me share my experience... we started from the bottom towards the top.  As we were told about 3 gates at the top, we were in search of gates. But seriously we didn’t find any of those gates. Somewhere after 20 minutes we got a big arch and we spent a few minutes there taking rest. I think that was the second gate, not sure. From there it was 10 minutes walk to reach the Shikareshwara temple. The temple is situated on a monolithic rock. There is a garbhagudi (sanctum) of the lord Shikhareshwara. We thought it was the top, but later we got to know that we were 1km far from the top of the hill. Few of our mates were fully tired and they decided to stay back. After taking 5 minutes rest once again we started towards the top.

On the way we saw the ruined palace. There were swimming pools, pillars, rooms. As we were getting late we were unable to spend much time there. In front of the palace there were some steps to reach the top. We took the same path. After climbing for a couple of minutes we got an arch and I am sure that was the 3rd gate. It was the top of hill. I felt heaven was in front of my eyes. The top was fully covered by the mist. Hardly we were able to see each others. I was little bit sad because we were unable to catch up the scenic view from the top. But I was lost in thoughts to think about those things. I was awestruck to see the mist covered. We spent about half an hour there enjoying the fog. We were hit by the evening cool breeze. We were unaware of timings and later we were shocked to see the watch. We realized that we ran short of time. We started climbing heading down and started our journey back to Sagara. I can elaborate that as a heavenly experience.

  2. As this is situated inside the lush green forests of western ghats, monsoon wouldn't suit to visit. Post monsoon will be better to visit here. You will have mist covered at the top.
